How Yoga Nidra can support children’s learning, emotional balance, creativity, and relaxation. Includes practical guidance and a complete Yoga Nidra script for ages 7–10.
Yoga Nidra can be practised even by young children. For kids between 8 and 14 years old, it can be difficult to remain still for long periods, yet they often relax much more quickly and deeply than adults. For this reason, sessions of 10–15 minutes are usually sufficient.
My first experience teaching Yoga Nidra for kids was with a seven-year-old child during a series of one-to-one lessons, and I encountered no difficulties. If children are particularly energetic, it can be helpful to have them spend 10 minutes doing a more active practice beforehand so that relaxation comes more easily afterward.
The script below is suitable for children around this age and for older children up to about 10 years old. For younger children, however, it should be adapted to match their developmental stage. For example, they may not yet be able to count backwards or follow more complex visualisation instructions.
If you have the time, follow each session with a short discussion and perhaps a drawing or creative activity that allows children to express and reflect on what they experienced during the practice.
Benefits of Yoga Nidra for Kids
1. Yoga nidra for education
According to Swami Satyananda Saraswati, true education is not simply the accumulation of information but the training and refinement of the mind.
Conventional teaching methods tend to focus on the intellectual level, asking students to understand and memorise concepts through conscious effort. In the yogic tradition, however, learning can occur at a much deeper level of awareness, where knowledge is absorbed more naturally and effortlessly.
From birth, we gather experiences and impressions that are stored in the mind in the form of symbols, images, emotions, and associations. Yogic teachings suggest that these deeper layers of the mind can be accessed directly, making learning more intuitive and meaningful.
For this reason, Yoga Nidra has attracted the interest of educators and researchers as a tool for enhancing concentration, memory, and learning ability. During the practice, the body enters a state of deep relaxation while the mind remains awake and attentive. This combination of relaxation and awareness creates a highly receptive mental state, allowing information and positive suggestions to be absorbed more effectively.
Some researchers have explored the idea that learning may continue during sleep or deeply relaxed states, a concept known as hypnopedia, or “sleep learning.” While the scientific evidence for acquiring complex knowledge during sleep remains limited, Yoga Nidra offers a unique approach by maintaining a thread of awareness throughout the practice, potentially supporting learning, creativity, and memory consolidation in ways that differ from ordinary sleep.

2. Emotional well-being and positive behavioral change in children
One of the most valuable skills a child can develop is the ability to recognise and manage emotions. During Yoga Nidra, children are guided to observe their feelings without judgment or immediate reaction. This practice helps them become less impulsive and more capable of responding thoughtfully to difficult situations. Over time, children may develop greater patience, resilience, and emotional balance.
3. Improved Sleep Quality
Many children struggle with difficulty falling asleep, restless nights, or anxiety at bedtime. The deep relaxation experienced during Yoga Nidra helps quiet the mind and release tension from the body, making it easier to fall asleep naturally.
Better sleep contributes to improved mood, stronger concentration, and healthier physical development. It is generally not recommended to practice Yoga Nidra immediately before bedtime. Although it is a deeply relaxing technique, it is still a state of conscious awareness between waking and sleep.
Practising it too late in the evening may make it easier for children to drift off to sleep during the session, which reduces the benefits of maintaining awareness throughout the practice.
In some cases, it can also slightly shift the sleep cycle or leave the mind in a subtly alert state, especially in children who are sensitive or highly receptive. For best results, Yoga Nidra is ideally practised earlier in the day or in the late afternoon, when the child is still naturally awake and able to remain gently attentive.
4. Support for Children with Anxiety and Attention Difficulties
Because Yoga Nidra is gentle, non-competitive, and does not require physical performance, it can be particularly beneficial for children who experience anxiety, hyperactivity, or attention difficulties. The guided nature of the practice offers a safe and structured environment where children can relax, develop self-regulation skills, and experience a sense of success without pressure.
5. Encourages Creativity and Imagination
Many Yoga Nidra practices for children incorporate visualisations, storytelling, and imaginative journeys. These elements stimulate creativity while also helping children access deeper levels of relaxation. Engaging the imagination in a positive way can enhance problem-solving skills, emotional expression, and creative thinking.

Children’s Yoga Nidra: The Magic Butterfly and the Magic Shoes
Now lie down on your mat, with your arms resting alongside your body, your legs stretched out, and your palms facing up.
Let your whole body become soft and heavy.
Gently close your eyes.
Take a slow breath in… and a slow breath out.
Again, breathe in… and breathe out.
Feel the air moving in and out of your body, cool and light.
Now, deep inside your heart, make a wish.
Think of something you would really like.
Repeat your wish silently to yourself three times.
Pause
You are very relaxed, but you are not asleep.
You can hear sounds around you, but they do not distract you.
You only listen to my voice.
Now imagine a beautiful butterfly.
Its wings are light and colorful.
Maybe they are blue, pink, yellow, purple, or all the colors of the rainbow.
You can imagine your butterfly however you like.
The butterfly is flying gently above you.
Slowly, it lands on your right foot.
It tickles your toes.
It touches your heel.
It rests on the sole of your foot.
Now it flutters up to your right ankle…
your right calf…
your right knee…
your right thigh…
your right hip…
your right side…
and your right shoulder.
Then the butterfly lifts off and floats across to your left foot.
It lands on your toes…
your heel…
and the sole of your foot.
Light as air, it moves to your left ankle…
your left calf…
your left knee…
your left thigh…
your left hip…
your left side…
and your left shoulder.
Now the butterfly flies to the center of your chest and rests over your heart.
Then it touches your lips…
your right cheek…
your left cheek…
your right eye…
your left eye…
your forehead…
and the top of your head.
The butterfly gives you a gentle smile and flies away into the sky.
Pause
Now let’s count backwards from 10 to 1.
Breathe in, 10.
Breathe out, 9.
Breathe in, 8.
Breathe out, 7.
Breathe in, 6.
Breathe out, 5.
Breathe in, 4.
Breathe out, 3.
Breathe in, 2.
Breathe out, 1.
Now continue counting quietly by yourself from 10 down to 1.
If you forget a number, that’s okay.
Simply begin again.
Pause
Now imagine it is morning.
You are lying in your bed.
Warm rays of sunshine are shining through your window.
You sit up and look around.
On the floor beside your bed is a beautiful pair of colorful shoes.
They sparkle and shine.
The soles glow with magical light, inviting you to put them on.
You slip your feet inside.
They fit perfectly.
Right away, you know these are no ordinary shoes.
These are magic shoes.
They have amazing powers.
With these shoes, you can jump incredibly high.
You could jump from one mountain to another if you wanted.
You decide to take a walk along the beach.
As you walk, the soles begin to glow brighter and brighter.
Tiny flashes of red light dance along the sides of the shoes.
You walk faster…
and faster…
and faster.
The light becomes brighter and brighter.
Soon you begin to jump.
Each jump is longer than the last.
You leap so far that it almost feels like flying.
When you reach the end of the beach, you see islands stretching across the sea.
With your magic shoes, you can jump from one island to another.
The small islands take only one jump.
The bigger islands take two.
The largest islands are full of mountains, forests, lakes, rivers, and villages.
You leap over them all.
Jump after jump, island after island, you travel all around the world.
At last, you arrive back at the very same beach where your adventure began.
You smile.
With your magic shoes, you have traveled around the whole world.
Now you are back in your room.
You take off your magic shoes and place them beside your bed.
You lie down, feeling happy, peaceful, and proud of your adventure.
Do you remember your wish?
The wish you made in your heart at the beginning?
Repeat it silently to yourself three more times.
Pause
Now begin to bring your attention back to the room.
Gently wiggle your toes.
Move your fingers.
Stretch your arms and legs if you like.
Take a nice deep breath in.
And slowly breathe out.
Roll gently onto your right side and rest there for a moment.
When you are ready, slowly sit up with your legs crossed.
Bring your hands together in front of your heart.
Bow your head gently.
Namaste.
